ECF and GSTC sign Memorandum of Understanding

Tuesday, March 3, 2026
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), transnational coordinator of EuroVelo, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a formal framework for cooperation.

This Memorandum of Understanding reflects a shared interest in advancing sustainability principles and encouraging greater alignment between tourism, mobility, and responsible development. Through this agreement, both parties express their intention to strengthen dialogue and explore opportunities for collaboration in sustainable tourism and mobility, especially involving cycling, while respecting their respective missions, mandates, and areas of expertise.

The MoU provides a general structure for cooperation that includes knowledge exchange and awareness-raising activities. It is intended to support mutual learning and foster synergies that contribute to the broader objectives of sustainable tourism and mobility and related efforts.

Under the terms of the agreement, both parties acknowledge the value of collaboration to enhance understanding of sustainability practices in tourism, and the opportunity of cycling as a mode of transport and leisure in that context. The MoU aims to encourage the adoption of best practices across the respective networks of GSTC and ECF.

Joint webinar to mark the launch of the collaboration

To mark the launch of this collaboration, GSTC and ECF plan to host a joint open webinar, the date of which will be announced soon, to introduce the partnership and outline the shared context behind the agreement. The session is intended to highlight examples from sustainable tourism practices and cycling tourism success stories, focusing on the benefits of collaboration in growing sustainable tourism and mobility.

The future webinar will also serve as an opportunity to engage with stakeholders from both communities and to set the scene for future dialogue and cooperation. Held under the title “Sustainable Cycling Tourism,” it will provide an overview of the collaboration and dive into sustainable tourism practices based on GSTC Standards as well as best practices in developing cycling tourism in various contexts.
