2016 EuroVelo Route Certification Training Course

Thursday, July 28, 2016
This year again, between the 7th & 8th July 2016, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) organised its Certification Training Course in Brussels, on the European Certification Standard. The 17 participants from different European countries learned about the certification process of the routes.

The European Certification Standard is not only used to certify EuroVelo routes, but also serves as quality assessment tool for national or regional routes. The European Standard can also help to set up national standards where they do not exist and harmonise the different regulations in the European states.

The participants had the opportunity to learn both theoretically, through the European Certification Standard Manual, and practically, through a field trip organised through the center of Brussels. During the two days of the training, the different criteria (infrastructure, services, promotion) were presented in detail and put into practice with the new and easy to handle EuroVelo Certification App, which provides an easy-to-use interface for checking the route criteria on the go. During the field trip around Brussels, data on route conditions was collected with the app, allowing the participants to get used to the methodology and practice of route certification.

At the end of the training, the participants were tested through a practical data collection and a written test. Before answering a questionnaire on the European Certification Standard Manual, the participants were sent out on a circuit to gather the relevant data, in order to potentially certify the route. With a 100% success rate, all the participants earned their diploma as an official EuroVelo Route Inspector.
